In preparing this review we have visited the Skyglaze factory to see the doors being made on several occasions and have also visited the extrusion and coating plants in Europe. Seeing these doors in-situ at a property, not just a showroom, is also important. For this specific review we spent substantial time at a Hampshire installation comprising many sets of LuxView doors in a variety of configurations and sizes including:

  • Standard and oversized doors
  • Double, triple and quadruple designs
  • Open corner configurations.

What is the LuxView 54 Sliding Door

The Skyglaze Slide is the company’s flagship sliding door, part of what it calls the Slide 54 Series.

It is a highly insulated, double or triple glazed aluminium sliding door with a 25mm interlock sightline and the ability to handle panels weighing up to 400kg manually or 750kg with automatic opening and closing.

This gives the manufacturer direct control over the profiles, hardware, track systems and engineering of the complete product. Only Skyglaze can supply the parts. The profiles, hardware, track systems and engineering are exclusive to the company, and the door is available in single, double, triple, quadruple and even five-track configurations.

With a significant range of sliding doors available in the UK today, what separates LuxView Slide 54 is the level of engineering and specialist expertise behind it. At this level, the company manufacturing and installing the doors becomes just as important as the product itself.

Skyglaze. The Company behind LuxView

Skyglaze in Surrey is behind these doors. With over thirty years of experience in prestigious installations, the company has a track record of industry firsts.

Skyglaze was the first UK company to manufacture the now widely available Cortizo Cor-Vision product, and importantly, also the first to have approval to sell it to the trade by Cortizo, with “Master Fabricator” accreditation.

Skyglaze was an early adopter of the structural glazing concept, designing the advanced Zeus skylight system when structural glass was still relatively unknown. Today, structural glazing is used not just in rooflights but in glass box extensions, balustrades and other applications designed to maximise the use of glass with the least visible frame.

Where most other manufacturers will take a system and make no further changes, Skyglaze has developed numerous new extrusions for their products through significant ongoing investment.

These extrusion and product changes are not just for enhanced design but also for their products to have the highest possible performance at the critical door elements. Examples include the flush or integrated with the floor track and vertical elements to make sure doors are fit for their location. More importantly, they independently test their own products for U-values and structural integrity, where others rely only on standard system company paperwork.

Skyglaze also invests heavily in specialist manufacturing equipment, including advanced CNC machining systems developed specifically to work with its sliding door products. They were the first in the UK to install and commission the LMX 650 Machining Centre, a significant investment in precision aluminium manufacturing.

In addition to their nationwide installation in the UK, the company has a successful American operation under the LuxView brand, with bases in Salt Lake City and Nashville and installations across the country. This helps clarify the brand architecture: Skyglaze is the UK manufacturer, LuxView is the US brand, and LuxView Slide 54 is the product available in the UK market.

LuxView Slide 54 Design and Engineering

The Slide 54 is a clean, contemporary sliding door with a minimalist frame designed to maximise the glass area.

These doors are designed to be hidden in the structure, although direct fix is also possible. However, the LuxView is only suitable for new build openings, not for replacing dated patio doors.

luxview sliding doors22

This is because the buried frame design requires the structural opening to be built around the door system. Retrofitting into an existing opening designed for a standard patio door would compromise both the aesthetic and the structural performance.

Standing in front of a LuxView 54 at the Hampshire installation, the first thing that strikes you is how little frame you actually see. With the buried frame option, the aluminium virtually disappears into the structure and what you’re left with is glass, floor and sky.

The 25mm interlock between panels is there but it doesn’t demand your attention. From both inside and outside, the door looks clean, minimalist and beautifully proportioned.

The interlock remains visually slim across all configurations, although the structural depth behind it varies depending on the wind loading requirements of the property.

The door is available with a completely buried frame option, where the head and jamb frames are concealed within the building structure, delivering a near-frameless aesthetic with unobstructed glass from top to bottom. A concealed bottom sash further enhances the clean lines.

Available configurations include stacking, bi-part, multi-slide, pocket doors, opening corners and frameless fixed corners. Maximum panel dimensions are 4m x 4m, which is typical of most doors at this level.

Key Design Features of the LuxView Slide 54 include

  • Contemporary and minimalist design
  • Tested and tiled-in track system.
  • Elegant and discreet designer door handle
  • 25mm interlock with variable depth to suit location and wind loading
  • Tried and tested in extreme conditions (hurricane-rated in Florida)
  • Premium-grade Aluminium and Qualicoat Standard marine-grade colours
Extensively tested, including destructive testing of glass panels

First impressions of this door are how attractive it looks from both sides. The fit and finish is superb and operating the small but secure handle is a pleasant experience, compared with the pull or flush handles of other sliding doors.

More impressive is the consistency of quality across every element of the many door sets fitted. From the smallest set in a playroom to the large open corner sets on the first and lower ground floor. Every door panel and frame has the same consistency of quality.

One of the advantages of LuxView Slide 54 is that the same company is responsible for the design, calculations, manufacture and installation process. On complex projects, this can reduce miscommunication and improve accountability from survey through to completion.

Sliding Action

Whether using the smaller single panel doors or the larger configurations, operation at the Hampshire property was effortless.

The sliding action is smooth, near-silent and has a reassuring weight to the movement without feeling heavy.

There’s a good feel to the transitional movement as each panel rolls across the flush floor track. There is no juddering, no resistance, just a controlled, even glide. You notice immediately that this feels more refined than the stiff or noisy operation sometimes experienced with lesser sliding systems.

This refinement is not just down to good design. Heavy duty steel wheels running on a stainless steel track provide smoother operation and improved long-term reliability compared with cheaper systems using plastic wheels on aluminium tracks. The roller design also helps protect the mechanism from debris beneath the flush floor track.

Technical Specification

Whilst Skyglaze has re-engineered a world-leading aluminium system, full technical specifications are never just generic product data sheets by the design company. Skyglaze does every essential calculation specifically for your set of doors. Every detail of your sliding doors, from its size, location, configuration and installation requirements are all carefully worked out and advised to you. This enables you to get not only accurate U-Values that are relevant to your installation and never quoted “as low as” but also your individual paint, product, hardware and manufacturing guarantee.

Finishes include standard colours in: Anthracite Grey, White, Jet Black, Clear Anodised, Silver, Gunmetal, Warm Bronze and Dark Bronze. Custom RAL colours and anodised finishes are available, as are bi-colour options with different internal and external frame colours. All finishes receive Qualicoat Seaside pre-treatment and Qualicoat II coating, which is important for coastal and exposed locations.

  • U-value: 0.83 W/m²K is possible with high performance glass
  • Acoustic insulation: Rw up to 43 dB
  • Security: PAS 24:2022 tested by Skyglaze
  • Thermal breaks: 25% fibreglass reinforced Polyamide 6.6
  • Maximum panel weight: 400kg (manual), 750kg (automated)
  • Maximum panel dimensions: 4m x 4m
  • Drainage: Multiple solutions including visible and concealed
  • Configurations: Stacking, bi-part, multi-slide, pocket doors, opening corners, frameless fixed corners

Track Options

It is the track options that are particularly impressive, giving you several options including a five track solution.

  • 2-track (78mm)
  • 3-track (164mm)
  • 4-track (250mm)
  • 5-track (336mm)

Glass Used

Skyglaze sources all its glass from a single European supplier, having determined that the quality available meets a higher standard than what is currently offered domestically.

For a product where the glass is by far the largest element, this is not a trivial decision, and one that most manufacturers wouldn’t make given the added logistical complexity.

outside view of sliding doors with garden furniture and terrace

So why is this important? For glass (and indeed paint finish) there are standards in the UK where imperfections are deemed satisfactory if not visible from a certain distance. Here is the glass information from the UK’s Glass and Glazing Federation on glass imperfections and what is deemed acceptable.

Skyglaze sources its glass to a higher standard than typically available domestically, reflecting the expectations of buyers investing at this level of product.

At a property with this much glass and so many sets of doors, across two levels and multiple rooms, any inconsistency in the glass would be immediately obvious. There was none. No distortion, no visible imperfections, no variation between panels. The glass was flawless across every door at this installation.

Why Where You Live Matters When Buying a Sliding Door

Sliding door companies today are so focused on marketing the slimmest possible central mullion sightline that they rarely make clear that this depends where your doors are located.

A clifftop house, an exposed property in the countryside, a high level apartment or a coastal location all place very different structural demands on a sliding door compared to a sheltered suburban garden in a new extension. Even gallery landings with glazed screens in front can’t have just any product.

As a result, the performance figures quoted by many systems companies and their installers can be vague, undocumented or based on “ideal” rather than real-world conditions. With some brands they are not even achievable.

That slim interlock that looks so appealing in a brochure may simply be too weak for your doors. This is where specialist sliding door companies stand apart, because structural calculations and location-specific engineering become just as important as aesthetics.

Specialist sliding door companies should prioritise structural suitability, compliance and long-term performance before aesthetics alone. Every LuxView Slide 54 door is individually calculated for its specific installation location and configuration.

This ensures not only that the doors are fit for purpose but that you won’t have any problems with building sign off at the end of the project. The marketing of the slim sightline on other doors rarely addresses that where you live affects the doors you can have or that the structural depth behind that slim sightline is engineered to match the demands of the specific location. It is essential when making such a substantial investment in sliding doors that the performance claimed by any manufacturer is backed up with calculations and documentation.

We can put you in touch with professional installers who carry out these calculations as standard. When investing in doors at this level, there are clear advantages to having one company responsible for the design, calculations, manufacture and installation process. Always ask to see the performance figures and supporting documentation for your specific project.

The Tiled In Track System

LuxView 54 doors come with the option of a tiled-in track system that makes the transition between indoors and outdoors appear seamless.

One notable difference is that Skyglaze has formally tested its tiled-in track system for weather performance and drainage.

top view of a tiled in track system on an open corner set of doors

For you wanting the best possible sliding doors, whilst Hyline, Cortizo and others offer a similar aesthetic, none of their manufacturers or installers to the best of our knowledge have put theirs through formal testing. You need genuine peace of mind that the track will perform as intended, particularly in terms of weather resistance and drainage. Again your location plays a large part here.

The wheel system is also distinctive. Unlike many sliding door systems where the rollers sit in the track at ground level, the Skyglaze wheels are housed above ground inside the panels. This makes the system easier to maintain and, according to the company, virtually maintenance-free.

Handles and Hardware

Two handle options are available. A slim handle with a modern, understated design and a “Grab” handle that combines minimalist aesthetics with ergonomic shaping. Both feature multi-point locking for security and premium concealed flip-latch operation. Keyed exterior lock options are available.

The slim handle is small, discreet and secure. It’s a pleasant change from the oversized flush pulls or recessed handles found on many competing sliding doors. Even better, the key is as small as a window key, yet the door is perfectly secure.

There’s a tactile quality to operating it. Unlock the door, the flip-latch conceals neatly, the locking action is precise and you get the sense that this hardware has been chosen to match the engineering of the door rather than picked from a catalogue.

Security and Energy Efficiency

The LuxView 54 is fully tested to PAS 24:2022, the current standard. This is not a claim based on a component or hardware test but on the complete door assembly. Security is delivered through multi-point locking with steel reinforcements in the interlocks.

The thermal performance is strong, with a U-value of 0.83 W/m²K, with highly insulated safety glass units and with the 25% fibreglass reinforced Polyamide 6.6 thermal breaks within the aluminium profiles. This comfortably meets current Document Q of Building Regulations and, importantly, Skyglaze can provide the documentation to prove it for your specific configuration and project.

With the American operation, these doors are fitted in Florida’s High Velocity Hurricane Zones. The LuxView product is also impact-certified to Miami-Dade testing protocols. So what does this mean for you? Well, you are unlikely to encounter a hurricane in Hampshire. However, a sliding door system designed, tested and certified to withstand hurricane-force conditions demonstrates engineering intended for significantly more demanding environments than most UK homes will ever experience.

How Much Do LuxView Slide 54 Doors Cost?

luxview sliding doors41 1

This particular project comprising seven sets of sliding doors in 2-Panel, 3-Panel designs, two sets of open corner door sets alongside fixed and opening windows, with and bespoke rooflight was £115000 plus VAT.

However, as you will be told by any company involved in projects of this type and scale, there are other factors that affect the price and individual door prices which make ‘guide’ prices inaccurate. As a bespoke, high-end product, pricing depends entirely on the project. Sizes, configurations, track options, glass, colours and installation requirements as well as location all affect the price.

There are other factors affecting these doors as well that are rarely considered:

  • Whether the project is just doors or part of a complete house making the doors cheaper
  • Large glass panel handling both in the factory and on site.
  • Transporation costs as curtain sided vehicles, cranes and lifting equipment are used.
  • The location of the property, considering loading/unloading times, permits for large vehicles in cities
  • Protection of all products including avoiding the thermal fracture of glass.
  • Working drawings alongside thermal and structural calculations, installion and setting out details.

For projects such as these, you are not looking at just a patio door. They are part of a full scheme and house build.

Other Products to Consider When Looking at LuxView 54 Sliding Doors

There are many sliding door brands available in the UK, from widely available trade systems like Cortizo, Origin, Smart Systems and Exlabesa through to higher-specification products from Reynaers and Schüco.

These are all capable systems when correctly specified and installed, although LuxView Slide 54 positions itself at the specialist end of the market, where bespoke engineering, testing and project-specific calculations become increasingly important.

More information, where to view and buy LuxView Slide 54 Sliding Doors

Walking through a home fitted with this many sliding doors from one brand is rare. LuxView Slide 54 doors in the bedrooms, kitchen and living spaces, in double, triple, quadruple and open corner configurations, gives you a sense of what these doors are really about.

Each set felt identical in use and feel, even the biggest panels. The same quality of movement, the same precision of fit, the same precision installation.

outside picture of modern house with many sliding doors and glass balustrades

The open corner configuration in particular was impressive, with two sets meeting at ninety degrees and no visible door post but a feature post inside the room.

This level of consistency in movement, fit and installation quality is ultimately what separates specialist sliding doors from more mainstream systems.

If your project demands expertise in architectural glazing and high-end sliding doors, the Skyglaze LuxView Slide 54 is well worth considering. What stands out is the level of project-specific engineering, testing and technical documentation provided throughout the process.

Whether you are an architect specifying for a project, a homeowner planning a renovation or new build, or a developer looking for a high-performance sliding door, LuxView Slide 54 feels distinctly different from many of the more mainstream slimline sliding door systems currently available in the UK.

For substantial glazing projects, having the same company responsible for the design, calculations, manufacture and installation process brings a level of continuity and accountability that is often beneficial on complex installations. Particularly where oversized panels, buried frames and demanding site conditions are involved.
