Who makes the best bifold doors? It’s one of the most common questions we receive.
The answer depends on what you mean by “best”. Some bifold doors are designed to offer the best value for money. Others focus on engineering, luxury, slim sightlines, commercial performance or steel-look styling.
After many years reviewing bifold doors and visiting manufacturers, systems companies, showrooms and installations throughout the UK and Europe, we believe there is no single best bifold door for every project.
Instead, certain products stand out in specific categories.
This guide explains which bifold doors we consider the best in 2026 and why.
Best Bifold Door at a glance
| Category | Top Choice | Key Features |
|---|---|---|
| Slimmest Sightlines | Alumil MF65 | This is not only the slimmest bifold door in the UK, but it is also remarkably well-priced. The product is also sold by Express Bifolds as the XP88. |
| Best for Most Homeowners | Cortizo Bifold Plus | Balance of features, quality, price, aesthetics, security. Cortizo is now a leading brand in the UK and their bifolds are excellent for most homeowners. This comes under several other brand names. |
| Premium Bifolds | Solarlux Bifolding Doors | German made, multiple threshold options, self-cleaning tracks, LED lighting, exclusive locking and handle designs, high-end luxury. |

| Commercial and Heavy Use | Schüco, Alumil SF85 and Solarlux | All three of these brands offer commerical heavy-duty solutions, Ideal for commercial environments, used in schools, libraries, various non-dwelling settings, robust design. Non-thermal options for internal use are also available. |
If you want the short answer, our current recommendations are Cortizo Bifold Plus for most homeowners, Solarlux for premium projects, Alumil MF65 for the slimmest sightlines, Schüco for engineering and Aluco for steel-look bifolds. Each excels in a different area, which is why there is no single best bifold door for every project.
For most homeowners in 2026, we believe the Cortizo Bifold Plus offers the best balance of quality, styling, performance, availability and value for money. Whilst some specialist bifolds may outperform it in specific areas, few combine product quality with such widespread availability throughout the UK.
What About Other Bifold Door Brands?
There are now well over fifty bifold door brands available in the UK. Many are excellent products. Others are rebadged versions of existing systems sold under different names.
It would be impossible to include every bifold door in a single guide, especially when many products share the same aluminium system, hardware and core design.
The products featured in this article are the ones we believe stand out in their respective categories. That does not automatically mean a brand not listed here is inferior.
If you have been quoted for a bifold door that is not mentioned in this guide, get in touch. We can usually tell you who designed it, whether it is a rebadged system, how it compares with competing products and whether there are alternatives worth considering.
Our advice is impartial, independent and based on more than three decades in the door and window industry.
How the Door and Window Experts Website reviews bifold doors
We have worked in the door and window industry since 1989 and regularly visit manufacturers, systems companies, fabricators and installers throughout the UK and Europe. We review products in showrooms, study technical documentation and gather feedback from the companies that design, manufacture, install and support bifolding doors.
This gives us a practical understanding of how products differ in the real world, beyond marketing claims and brochure specifications.
Evaluating quality when choosing the best bifold
Bifold doors vary in design, quality, price and features. The good news is there is no bad product on the market. Well-made and properly installed, even the lower-priced doors are reliable and will give you a good experience.
The best bifolding doors will also depend on where you’re fitting them, for instance, in a dwelling as the main set of garden access doors, one of several patio door sets, or even a commercial environment where bars, restaurants or offices place greater demands on a bifold, compared with a door set in a typical home. In this guide we only consider Aluminium framed bi-folding doors, other materials such as timber and uPVC have not been included.
Bearing in mind that people will have different criteria when choosing the best bifold doors, so in this guide we have picked the best systems from each of the following styles:
- Best overall bifold for most uses
- Premium bifolds
- Engineering and design
- Budget bifolding patio doors
- Heritage or steel look bifolds
- Commercial and heavy use
Best Bifold for Most Homeowners
Choosing the best bifold door for most homeowners is not necessarily about finding the slimmest sightlines, the biggest panel sizes or the most prestigious brand. It is about finding a product that balances quality, styling, performance, availability and value for money.
For 2026, our choice is the Cortizo Bifold Plus.
Cortizo Bifold Plus
Cortizo has become one of the most widely used aluminium systems in the UK, with a large network of manufacturers and installers offering the product. This widespread availability means homeowners can compare quotations more easily, view the product in showrooms across the country and benefit from strong competition between suppliers.
The Bifold Plus also delivers where it matters. Slim sightlines, good security, reliable operation, attractive styling and competitive pricing make it one of the easiest bifold doors to recommend. Whilst more specialist products may offer slimmer dimensions, larger sizes or more exclusive engineering, the Cortizo Bifold Plus strikes an excellent balance between performance and affordability.
For most homeowners looking for a well-designed aluminium bifold door from a proven and widely available system, the Cortizo Bifold Plus is currently our recommendation.
Visofold 1000 Slim
The Visofold 1000 Slim is one of the safest recommendations in the UK bifold market. Smart Systems products are manufactured by hundreds of fabricators nationwide and have been installed in large numbers for many years. That widespread availability means competitive pricing, excellent familiarity amongst installers and long-term support should anything ever need servicing or replacing.
The Slim version improves on the original Visofold with previous 134mm sightlines down to a more typical 120mm, whilst retaining the reliability that made the product popular in the first place. It may not have the engineering sophistication of some premium German brands, but for homeowners looking for a proven bifold from the UK’s largest aluminium systems company, the Visofold 1000 Slim remains a dependable and sensible choice.
Aluk F82 Plus
The F82 Plus has been on the market for a while and deserved greater recognition all these years. The panel sightlines of 122mm are very respectable and the outer frame and cill design creates a consistent picture frame look with the same 97mm sightline throughout. Whilst newer products may offer slimmer dimensions, the F82 Plus remains a thoroughly proven design with strong security, reliable operation and excellent weather performance.
The system has been refined over the years and is well understood by manufacturers and installers alike. As a result, homeowners benefit from a bifold that is dependable, widely available and competitively priced.
Aluk BSF70 HI Bifold Doors
Equal to the Visofold 1000 bifold door for longevity and reputation, also a firm favourite with the trade is Aluk’s BF73 bifold door. It’s styled similarly, has a heavy-duty version and is another super-reliable bifold when well-made and fitted. It’s widely avaialble, easy to fit and supported by Aluk that has been strong in the UK market for nearly seven decades.
The distinctive feature of the Aluk bifold is the pop-out T-Handle on the intermediate panels with options for better insulation, acoustics and security. Aluk are very transparent about their U-Values and overall performance which takes the complication out of buying their doors.
Premium Bifold Doors
If budget is not your primary consideration, the best high-end or luxury bifolding doors differ because they’re made and designed better than other brands. They also have features and options other bifold doors don’t come with. Another reason to choose these doors is that the company that designed them also makes and supports them either directly or through a carefully selected and trained installer network.
Solarlux Bifolding Doors
Solarlux invented bifold doors. When you choose a Solarlux bifold, whether all aluminium, all wood or a combination of wood and aluminium, this brand gives you several features you won’t find on other doors. Made in Germany, Solarlux doors offer more threshold and track options, self-cleaning tracks, optional LED lighting, and even the facility to clean the outside pane of glass from inside the house on certain models.
The locks, handles, and hardware are all designed by Solarlux – they do not use hardware from other manufacturers like most other brands. A Solalrux bifold is also one of the slimmest. The Solarlux Megaline is so advanced it can go up to heights only possible with the most expensive sliding doors.
Whichever of the Solarlux bifolding doors you choose, all promise a luxurious, high-end product with a distinctive style and the best possible materials and specifications. Solarlux is the best-engineered and made on the market. A Solarlux bifold costs more, it takes longer to make, and the lead times for delivery are longer, too. However, the waiting and overall investment are well worth it.
Sunflex SF 75 Eco Bifolding Doors
Another Made in Germany prestige bifolding door is Sunflex. The Sunflex brand delivers some of the slimmest sightlines and incredible product quality. Sunflex doors are all about style and carefully thought-out reasons to do things differently from other brands. One example is the main bifold door handles.
Sunflex handles sit vertically, running down the profile instead of horizontally. As a result, you don’t get to see the back of the door handle as you look through the glass. Other components come with typical German over-engineering, such as the door catches, allowing sequential closing of the panels. Any Sunflex bifolding door provides excellent styling, thin aluminium profiles and overall user experience. It is also well-priced.
Award-winning Sunflex bifolding doors are available in aluminium or hybrid aluminium and timber versions and offer some of the highest specifications on the market.
Best Bi-fold door for overall engineering and design options
Certain bifold doors are engineered better and to meet specific needs. You may need a threshold and track for the disabled use or one that goes over and above what comes as standard. Perhaps you want the widest possible door panels and the best insulation, security and overall specifications. These bifolding doors automatically include the ultra-premium brands mentioned, but also include products offering an equally impressive product and user experience at a lower price.
Schüco AS FD 75 and AS FD 90
You only have to operate a Schuco bifolding door, then try another brand and the quality, design, and engineering are obvious. Contemporary styling, slim sightlines, high-end door handles, German engineering and design, but made in the UK. Most glazing professionals regard the Schuco brand as one of the best too.
The AS FD 75 and AS FD 90 comfortably accommodate some of the widest bifold door panels currently available.
The ASFD75, now slimmer than most on the market, yet with the same impressive 1.5m wide panels if you want them. Simply put, a Schuco bifold gives you the best of all worlds in terms of styling, capability, brand reputation and product quality.
Alumil MF65 Bifold Doors
You might not have heard of the name. However, Alumil bifolds are offered by leading UK-brands such as Express Bifold Doors and other quality manufacturers and home improvment companies. These bifold doors are superb and internationally used, tried and tested and the slimmest with an 88mm panel junction sightline. Alumil systems are widely used internationally, including in some of the world’s most demanding climates.
Alumil despite their slim sightlines are capable of some of the biggest panel sizes. The hardware is unique to the product, the product benefits are substantial. You’ll be rewarded with a bifold door that’s distinctive and contemporary in appearance, is surprisingly affordable, and that’ll last for years, when well made and fitted.
Overall, Alumil are fantastic bifolds, effortless to slide, contemporary in styling and the engineering is first class. Highly recommended and worth seeing the doors before you make a buying decision.
Solarlux Bifold Doors
Like Schüco, Solarlux are at the top end and their engineering shows inside and out. Some products have been discontinued in response to lower U-Values being required, but these doors are superb in pretty much every way.
Bifolds with slim sightlines
In reality, most bifolding doors have similar dimensions to the surrounding frame, comprising the physical door panels. Where they differ are the dimensions of the closed-door panels or middle mullions. In our professional opinion, you should never discount an otherwise excellent bifolding door because it is a little thicker. Other features of the door, such as the quality of its components, how well it slides and folds and its overall design, matter more. However, if getting the thinnest possible dimension at the closed panel junctions matters the most, here are the best bifolding doors with the slimmest dimensions and providing a great overall door experience.
With a meeting panel dimension of 88mm, the Alumil Smartia MF65 is the slimmest product in the UK. However, you will struggle to find Alumil generally. The Express Bifolds product is our recommendation for the Alumil Smarta, which is exactly the same Alumil product.
Alumil MF65/Express XP88
With an ultra-slim 88mm meeting stile, the Alumil MF65 is currently one of the slimmest bifolding doors available in the UK. It combines contemporary styling with impressive engineering, large panel capabilities and excellent overall value.
Whilst the Alumil brand itself is not widely recognised by homeowners, many leading glazing companies use the system under their own branding. One of the best known examples is the Express XP88, which is based on the same Alumil platform.
What makes the MF65 particularly impressive is that the slim sightlines do not come at the expense of capability. The system comfortably handles large panel sizes, offers excellent security and weather performance, and provides a noticeably premium feel in daily operation.
In our view, the Alumil MF65 and Express XP88 achieve something many slim bifolds struggle with. They combine minimal sightlines with first-class engineering, attractive pricing and genuine real-world practicality.
One reason Alumil is not currently our recommendation for most homeowners is that its UK network remains smaller than more established brands. As availability, showrooms and fabricator support continue to grow, that position may change.
Visofold 6000
Widely available nationwide, this door is well designed, reliable and secure and comes from the UK’s biggest aluminium system company. The sightlines are only 94mm at the panel junctions.
Visofold 6000 suits standard-size openings better than larger ones. Its door panels also don’t go as wide or as tall as other brands. The handle options are fewer too. However, its impressive slim mullion face dimensions and broad affordability make it worth considering. We’ve fully reviewed Visofold 6000 and think is a great product.
Aluk Iconic
The AluK Iconic is the latest addition to the Aluk range and represents a significant step forward for AluK. Designed specifically for contemporary homes, it offers slimmer sightlines, larger glass areas and a more refined appearance than some of the company’s older bifold products.
What we particularly like is that AluK has focused on creating a modern bifold that feels current without becoming overly complex. The styling is attractive, the mullion sightlines are 87mm making these one of the slimmest as well. And the product benefits from AluK’s extensive UK manufacturing network. For homeowners seeking a contemporary and slim-frame bifold from an established and trusted systems company, the Iconic is new and with excellent specifications.
Schuco ASFD75
The latest Schüco folding sliding doors provide the slimmest option of the premium brands. These have a super-slim 90mm sightline with all the top-end engineering and design only Schüco excels at. These are the best bi folding doors on the market, with thin sightlines at the upper-end of the market.
Check out the sightlines of every UK bifold here.
Bifolding doors on a budget
The market for more affordable bifold doors is substantial. Many companies and brands provide quality products at slightly lower prices, appealing to the trade, DIY installers or those constrained by budget. Here are what we know to be bifold doors at more competitive prices.
Cortizo Bifold
Whilst superceded by the Plus model, you can still get Cortizo doors due to their large manufacturing base and rebranding. This often means prices on these doors are at the more affordable price point, depending on the installer and where they buy them from. There are two models, the Cortizo Bifold and the newer Cortizo Bifold Plus.
Whether for residential or commercial projects, this evolution of Cortizo’s bifolding door range has grown substantially in the UK and in 2026 these doors are modern and up-to-the-minute. They are greaet for replacing dated patio doors as well as for a new extension.
Alunet Bifold Doors
Newer on the market and designed to replicate the styling and size capability of the more premium Schüco ASS 70 FD model is the Alunet bifold door.
The sightlines are slim at 120mm, the prices affordable, and widely used under the Alunet and Alutech brands, but also rebranded under other brand names. It does what it says on the tin, it’s a trade favourite, it’s cheap to buy. Well made and properly fitted, it should serve you well.
Smart Systems Visofold 1000 and Visofold 1000 Slim
The Visofold 1000 bifold door and the new slimmer version called Visofold 1000 Slim come from the UK’s biggest aluminium systems company. Visofold doors are tried and tested over many years, extensively used and provide anyone looking for a more affordable bifold door with a reliable and attractive product.
With such wide availability from numerous manufacturers, you’ll likely find the Smart Systems Visofold 1000 at a great price. Or you can get in touch with us for details of your nearest supplier or installer. See our Review.
Korniche Bifold Doors
Korniche has built a strong reputation by focusing on what many homeowners and installers actually want. Attractive products, competitive pricing and straightforward installation. Unlike some systems companies that primarily design products for fabricators, Korniche has always placed significant emphasis on the installer and homeowner experience.
The bifold door itself offers slim sightlines, good thermal performance and modern styling that suits contemporary extensions and renovation projects. One of its strongest selling points is the speed and simplicity of installation, with much of the engineering designed to reduce fitting time and minimise the potential for installation errors. That practical approach has helped Korniche gain a loyal following amongst installers throughout the UK.
What we particularly like is that Korniche has avoided overcomplicating the product. The door looks good, performs well and is usually competitively priced. It may not offer the engineering sophistication of brands such as Schüco, Solarlux or Alumil, but it was never designed to. Instead, Korniche focuses on delivering a reliable, attractive bifold door that represents good value for money and is widely available through a growing installer network. It’s ideal homeowners seeking a modern bifold door without moving into premium pricing territory.
Heritage Bi folding Doors in the Crittall® style and steel-look
In reality, any bifold door can have bars applied to the glass, giving it a Crittall® style, industrial, Scandi or Art-Deco look. However, you’ll mostly struggle to find a bifold with door profiles designed to replicate the steel look and one that isn’t an otherwise standard bifold door. There are two brands, we consider the best when it comes to the best bi folding doors in the Crittall® or industrial style.
Aluco steel-look bifolding door
Based on the Visofold 6000 but improved and with a wider choice of handles, the Aluco steel-look bifolding door features a stepped heritage sash, excellent product quality and comes from a premium aluminium brand.
Aluco also has the advantage of providing steel-look windows, a full aluminium internal doors range, giving you a one-brand solution for steel replacement windows or new windows in this popular style.
Smart Systems Visofold 6000 with Heritage Sash
The Smart Systems Visofold 6000, mentioned earlier provided with a heritage sash, offers a similar stepped sash appearance as the best-selling Crittall style aluminium French door and comes with the same period handle option. It’s the only product on the market giving a more authentic style, and overall it’s an excellent product at a mid-range price.
Origin OB-36+
The Origin OB-36+ is one of the most distinctive bifolding doors currently available in the UK because it is the only bifold door with a feature lock body, giving it an industrial appearance unlike any competing product. Combined with Origin’s outstanding colour range, fast lead times, excellent guarantee and extensive nationwide dealer network, it is easy to see why the brand remains one of the most recognisable names in the UK bifold door market.
In our view, Origin products are expensive in 2026, especially when there are alternative systems on the market offering similar, and in some cases better, specifications at a lower price point. However, the quality of the product, strong brand reputation, extensive personalisation options and widespread availability are its strong points.
Bi folding doors for heavy-duty and commercial use
The demands and expectations placed on a bifold door in a dwelling are significantly less than on a bifold in a commercial, public or higher-traffic environment. If your bifolding door is likely to have intensive use or higher traffic, we consider these to be the best for their standard or optional heavy-duty design and hardware for heavy usage. These doors are designed for restaurants, bars, shops, car showrooms, and other non-dwellings.
These bifolds also offer a range of threshold options that are more suitable for commercial settings and meet Part M of Building Regulations better than purely residential systems like Origin.
Solarlux Bifold Doors
The Solarlux bifold is already extensively used in commercial environments and specified by architects for schools, libraries, leisure buildings and elsewhere. There’s also a non-insulated bifold used commercially in offices as partition screens or where flexible space is required.
The Ecoline, Highline and SL45 are three of the most commonly used and best bi folding doors for commercial use.
Aluk BSF70 HD
Essentially with the same aluminium profiles as residential bifold, the Aluk BSF70 HD comes with heavier duty rollers and an increased weight per panel of up to 130kg. The maximum panel height reduces from 3000mm to 2400mm but it’s an excellent lower-cost solution for public buildings, retail and leisure.
Alumil SF85
These doors are built to go up to extreme sizes and are widely used in demanding environments. Heavy duty hardware, reliable and robust, it’s a safe option for all sorts of commercial uses.
Schuco ASFD75
As this door comes with several threshold types, it’s ideal as a commercial bifold door and is already widely used, tried and tested.
Which Bifold Door Would We Choose?
If budget was no object and we wanted the best premium bifold available today, we would choose Solarlux.
For the slimmest sightlines combined with excellent engineering and value for money, we would choose Alumil MF65 or the identical Express XP88.
If engineering, capability and German design were our priority, we would choose Schüco AS FD 75.
If we were creating a complete steel-look home, we would choose Aluco Elite.
If we were advising most homeowners in 2026, we would recommend the Cortizo Bifold Plus because it combines strong product quality with excellent availability throughout the UK.
If colour choice, fast lead times and a large installer network were important, Origin remains one of the strongest brands on the market.
There is no single best bifold door for every project.
Unlike windows, bifold doors place significant demands on their hardware, rollers, hinges and overall engineering. They are among the largest moving products in the home and the differences between systems are often far more noticeable in day-to-day use. How smoothly the doors operate, the quality of the handles and hardware, the threshold design and the overall engineering can vary considerably between brands.
That is why we always recommend seeing bifold doors in person wherever possible. Operate them, compare them and look beyond the brochure specifications. A well-made and properly installed bifold door should provide decades of reliable service and transform the way you use your living space.
Are bifold doors still worth buying in 2026?
Absolutely. Despite the popularity of sliding doors, bifold doors remain one of the best ways to create a wide opening between your home and garden. Modern bifolds are slimmer, more thermally efficient and better engineered than ever before. If your priority is opening up an entire wall, bifold doors remain difficult to beat.
Do bifold doors need planning permission?
In most cases, no—bifold doors are often considered permitted development, so you typically won’t need permission if they replace an existing door or window without altering your home’s exterior. However, you will need planning permission or listed building consent if:
You live in a listed building or conservation area
The doors are part of a larger extension beyond permitted development limits
You’re creating a new opening or adding a balcony or raised area
When in doubt, always check with your local planning authority to ensure compliance.
How much do Bifold Doors Cost
You should expect to pay between £900-£1200 plus VAT per panel for a decent for an entry-level to mid range bifold door per panel and from £1500-£2000 plus VAT per panel for the more expensive, premium and better designed brands.
How long does it take to install bifold doors?
The fitting of bifold doors should take no more than one day for a three or four panel set. Larger door sets, their location and whether fixed or open corner designs may take longer. Here’s what to look out for when purchasing a new bifold door.
What is the best bifold door?
There is no single best bifold door for every project. For most homeowners in 2026, we recommend the Cortizo Bifold Plus because it offers an excellent balance of styling, performance, availability and value for money. For premium projects, Solarlux remains our top choice, whilst Alumil MF65 currently offers the slimmest sightlines available in the UK.
Are bifold doors going out of fashion?
Absolutely not. Bifolding doors available today are slimmer, more energy-efficient, technically excellent and remain an excellent investment in your home. Still not sure? Here are all the advantages you only get with a bifold door.
Why are Solarlux Bifolding Doors considered premium?
Solarlux invented the modern bifold door and continues to engineer many of its own hardware components, handles, locks and accessories. Features such as self-cleaning tracks, multiple threshold options, optional LED lighting and exceptional build quality place Solarlux amongst the most sophisticated bifold doors available anywhere in the world.
Are bifold doors secure?
Yes. Modern bifold doors are extremely secure when properly manufactured and installed. Most quality systems achieve PAS 24 security accreditation and feature multi-point locking systems, high security cylinders and robust aluminium profiles. The quality of manufacture and installation is just as important as the bifold system itself.
What is the Slimmest Bifold Door in the UK?
The Alumil MF65 currently offers the slimmest panel junction sightline available in the UK at just 88mm. The same product is also available through selected manufacturers under different brand names, including the Express XP88. Importantly, the slim sightlines are combined with excellent engineering and competitive pricing.
Are bifold doors better than sliding doors
Neither is automatically better. Sliding doors provide larger glass areas and slimmer sightlines. Bifold doors create a much wider opening when fully folded back. If uninterrupted views are your priority, sliding doors are often the better choice. If opening up an entire wall is more important, bifold doors usually win.
