One of the most commonly asked questions to this website relates to information and advice about the Schüco and Origin bifolding door and what is the better door. Since we first wrote this article in 2016, both Origin and Schüco continue to be compared. However, since 2016, both Schüco and Origin have brought out new products.

It is also worth noting that Origin today is a very different proposition from the company we first reviewed nearly a decade ago. The introduction of the OB49 and OB36+ has given Origin products that are considerably slimmer and more specialised than the original OB72. Similarly with Schüco, the original and best selling ASS 70 FD has been discontinued.

However, in 2026, our price research indicates Origin is often only £100 to £200 cheaper than Schüco on comparable configurations. As a result, many homeowners now find Schüco represents the better overall value proposition.

For design and engineering, brand reputation, size capability and overall technical refinement, Schüco remains the stronger product.

Here’s our guide updated for 2026, to choosing between Schuco and Origin bifold doors to help you choose the best door for you.

Origin vs Schüco: Which is the better bifold door?

If the steel look, price and delivery times are not your primary concern, then in virtually every respect, the Schüco bifold door is the better bifold.

Better made, superior in its design and engineering, larger panel sizes, smoother sliding, more and better track options, and brand reputation. All these factors make it better than any of Origin’s bifold doors. To the novice, you only need to slide and fold a Schüco bifold to feel how much better this door moves, feel, locks and works, compared to an Origin.

Schüco bifolds are better than Origin internally too. Schüco profiles generally contain more internal structure, additional sealing arrangements and more complex thermal break design. The Origin profile looks simpler by comparison. The quality of engineering in Schüco bifold doors such as the AS FD 75 and AS FD 90 is immediately apparent, even to those with little experience of bifold doors.

The Schüco bifold is by far the most reliable and proven door for heavy duty applications and commercial installations. Whilst Origin doors are used commercially, they predominantly serve the residential market.

Schüco also has the tracks suitable to meet commercial installations in restaurants, coffee shops and bars complying with Part M of Building Regulations. To the best of our knowledge Origin does not.

But as with any “best” product, it depends on several factors. First is how it is made and fitted. Both these doors need to be well made and professionally installed.

Bifolding Door Sightlines

Bifolding Door Sightlines at Panel Junctions
Schüco AS FD 7590mm
Schüco AS FD 9090mm
Origin OB-49110mm
Origin OB-36+84mm
Origin OB-72154mm

Whilst the OB-36+ is technically slimmer than the Schüco AS FD 75 at the panel junction, sightlines alone do not tell the whole story. Schüco’s advantage lies in larger panel sizes, greater structural capability and overall engineering refinement.

Do also be aware of the very smart Origin marketing, giving you dimension of a single profile dimension of 36mm for the OB-36, 49mm for the OB-49, and yes 72mm sightline for the OB-72. Multiply each x2 and add for the Q-Lon gaskets in between and your sightline is as above. Being fair to them their manuals don’t mislead. Far from it. However, it’s the up front headline messages that need scrutiny. Origin’s advertised dimensions refer to one side of the panel junction rather than the complete visible sightline you will actually see.

The OB-36, marketed as the slimmest can also go up to a 280mm wide sightline where lockbox handle meets lockbox handle, such as on a configuration with double doors.

We also compare the UK’s slimmest bifold doors, where you can see the panel junction sightlines of all brands.

Where Origin can be better than Schüco

We’ve listed the many design and engineering advantages of buying a Schüco bifold over any of the Origin offerings. But that doesn’t mean Origin bifolds are bad bifolds. Far from it. Origin is one of the best known brands in the UK and any of their products will serve you brilliantly.

Origin bifolds are more widely available around the UK than Schüco. The manufacturing lead times are also faster on Origin bifolds than they are with Schüco.

For 2026, Origin now has three models in its lineup. These are sold as the Soho, the Gallery or the Georgian. Essentially these are still the existing three products:

  • The OB-49 for Gallery (previously called Contemporary)
  • The OB-36+ for Soho
  • The OB-49 or the OB-36+ and the OB-72 for Georgian

Origin is the better ‘steel-look’ bifold

With the OB36+ bifold door, you get a door that looks better in the steel look. Schüco doesn’t presently have such a product but you can put bars on any bifold to achieve the grid-like pattern.

Better personalisation options with Origin bifolds

Without question, Origin offers more handle styles, textures and colour options than Schüco bifolds, including colour matched seals. If these features matter in your choice of bifold doors, then Origin will give you more than the standard colour offering of silver, black and white that Schüco bifolds come with.

The Origin Marketing Messages

Origin are a substantial and reputable company and do make good products. However, a lot of their wording is clever marketing and their prices are now higher in 2026.

You’ll read phrases like “premium grade aluminium”. The aluminium used in quality doors and windows is produced to recognised industry standards. There is no such thing as a unique premium grade of aluminium available exclusively to one manufacturer. It’s the same for their powder coated colour finishes and Qualicoat Standard. All reputable systems companies are Qualicoat or Qualanod (for anodised colours) certified and the Qualicoat website confirms this. The glass quality is out of their control as they supply unglazed products and you also need to read the 20 year warranty carefully.

A lot of dealers claim it to be the best. There is no best as this depends on too many factors for doors and windows. They have a substantial number of dealers in the UK, so it can end up as a product you could approach other dealers with because so many people offer the product.

Why Schüco bifolds are better than Origin

Better profiles, better engineering, reputation, larger panel sizes and more track and threshold options. Whilst the Origin OB36+ has the slimmest panel junction sightline, Schüco combines slim sightlines with larger panel sizes and greater technical capability.

All of these features that remain important in your choice of bifold door are better with the Schüco bifold. But it is worth comparing both products. Once you slide and fold a Schüco door, the better sliding action and quality is immediately evident.

Where Schüco is substantially better in our view is when you need matching single or double doors. Origin’s residential door products are modified bifolds. Schüco can do this too, but they also have a better range of residential doors. The Q-Lon Origin use on their bifolds extends to their single and double doors and it does not look good. When you go and see any Origin door, look at the corners of both the frame and the opening sashes.

Schüco has two models now available for 2026.

  • The AS FD 75
  • The AS FD 90

The Schüco AS FD 75 and AS FD 90.HI are folding sliding systems with several key differences:

  • Frame depth: The AS FD 75 has a depth of 75 mm, while the AS FD 90.HI has a depth of 90 mm.
  • Thermal insulation: The AS FD 90.HI offers superior thermal insulation compared to the AS FD 75.
  • Vent height: The AS FD 75 supports heights up to 3000 mm, while the AS FD 90.HI accommodates up to 3500 mm.
  • Airtightness: The AS FD 90.HI provides greater airtightness, achieving U-values as low as 1.0 W/m²K.
  • Face width: Both systems have a slim 90 mm face width.
  • Opening types: Both systems offer a variety of opening configurations, including a side-hung door option.
  • Threshold types: Each system includes three threshold options.
  • Sealing: Both feature an improved sealing system with two continuous gasket levels.
  • Security: Both meet burglar resistance standards of RC 2.

The AS FD 90.HI is the more advanced option, delivering better thermal performance and accommodating larger vent heights.

Whether you choose the Schüco AS FD 75 or the AS FD 90, both these doors come with advantages over the Origin products and all of these are to do with technical capability.

Similarities of Schüco and Origin Bifolding Doors

There are a number of similarities between both Origin and Schüco bifolding doors. Both are bottom hung doors meaning that the weight of the bifolds is at the bottom. This is generally the accepted type for most bifolding doors. Other features both doors offer include:

  • A choice of cill sections and installation with or without a cill.
  • Glass upgrades such as integral blinds
  • The provision of a trickle vent where required.
  • An open corner post arrangement
  • A choice of configurations and designs
  • Doors made to order

The DWE choice – Schüco over Origin

For most homeowners, neither of these products would be considered a poor choice. Both are premium aluminium bifold doors from established manufacturers with strong reputations. The decision comes down to what matters most to you.

Choose Schüco if engineering, larger panel sizes, threshold options, technical performance and long-term product quality are your priorities.

Choose Origin if you value heritage styling, personalisation, shorter lead times and access to a larger nationwide dealer network.

Overall, if both products are available to you at a similar price, our preference remains Schüco.

With Origin’s prices now much closer to Schüco than they once were, our preference would be to choose the Schüco. However if your project also has windows, then you’ll need to make a decision on whether the OW70 is better than the Schüco AWS 80 for for your project. You have to see both brands to see the differences. Get in touch with us as we can help with showrooms having both these products on display.

As we say, any of these doors well made and fitted will serve you well. And they all come with today’s essential bifold features and benefits.

You’ll notice on Schüco bifolds that the locking the doors involves a different method to Origin bifolds. This is the German way of locking the doors. However, it is possible to get the same lift to lock system with Origin. Again you can get in touch for more information.
