Aluminium Flush Casement Windows

Aluminium Flush Casement Windows

Aluminium flush casement windows are now firmly established in the UK market, with plenty of choice for homeowners and the trade. Flush casement windows differ from regular windows because the opening elements sit within the frame rather than overlapping it. The aesthetic advantage is balanced and symmetrical sightlines with a flatline appearance to the outside of the windows.

Our current choice for the best aluminium flush casement window is the Smart Systems Alitherm 400. It is not the most expensive, the most luxurious or the slimmest flush window on the market. Its strength is an attractive aluminium flush casement window, supported by a range of additional profiles, including regular stepped vent, a tilt and turn and steel look option, with front and patio doors. Alitherm 400 also provides up-to-date-styling, reliable specifications, strong installer availability and sensible pricing.

Best overall does not mean best at everything. It means the best balance for most buyers. Other aluminium flush casement windows may be better suited to your project if you want a more premium specification, slimmer contemporary styling, a fully flush inside and outside design, or a lower-cost option. Some of the handle options vary between the brands as well.

How we chose the best aluminium flush casement windows

Choosing the best aluminium flush casement window is not simply about finding the slimmest frame or the most expensive brand. A good flush casement window needs to look right, perform properly, be made well, come from a reputable system, and be installed by a competent company.

For this guide, we have judged each aluminium flush casement window against the criteria that matter most to homeowners, architects, installers and anyone comparing products in the UK market.

Flush casement design and appearance

A flush casement window should give you clean, balanced sightlines, with the opening sash sitting neatly within the outer frame. We looked at how convincing each window is as a flush casement design, whether it suits modern or traditional homes, and whether the frame proportions look refined rather than bulky.

Most of our favourite brands of flush casement windows look great from the outside and none except for two offer the flush appearance inside as well.

Sightlines and frame proportions

Slim sightlines are important, but they are not the only measure of a good window. We looked at visible frame sizes, sash proportions, glazing area, corner detailing and how the product looks when fitted with trickle vents, mullions, transoms or dummy sashes.

Some windows look excellent as single casements but less balanced when used across a full house. Others work better on larger openings or contemporary projects. Flush casement windows are never intended as the slimmest on the market, but they nonetheless have to look appealing.

Technical performance

The best aluminium flush casement windows need to meet modern expectations for thermal performance, weather protection and security. We considered U-values, weather ratings, glazing options, PAS 24 availability, acoustic performance where relevant, and whether the published specifications are clear and trustworthy.

This matters because not every quoted U-value means the same thing. Some figures relate to glass only, some to a particular window size and glass specification, and some depend heavily on the final configuration. The good news is that most systems today are security, air, wind and water tested, but it is always worth checking specifications with us or your installer. Some brands will only meet current Building Regulations as a triple glazed product.

Product quality and engineering

Aluminium windows can look similar on a screen, but the better products usually show their quality in the window design and overall engineering. We considered profile design, gasket detail, hardware, locking, drainage, finish quality, corner construction and how well the system has been developed as a complete window suite.

A good flush casement window should not just look good when new. It should remain square, secure, weatherproof and easy to use for many years. One feature many people don’t consider is sound-proofing. Because flush windows sit within the frame, some brands are not as tight as their overalapping counterparts. This does not mean the window will leak or let in sound, however it is worth remembering flush windows won’t be as fully sealed as the overlapping style. Check out the PA or Pascal ratings which we can confirm for you as well.

System range and matching products

Most homeowners are not buying one window in isolation. They may also need fixed windows, shaped frames, tilt and turn windows, French doors, residential doors, bifold doors, sliding doors or heritage-style glazing.

We gave extra credit to systems that form part of a wider product suite, because this helps create a consistent appearance across the whole property.

Availability and installer network

The best window on paper is not always the best choice in practice. Availability matters. We looked at whether the product is widely available, whether installers understand it, whether replacement parts and technical support are accessible, and whether homeowners have a reasonable chance of finding a competent supplier.

This is one reason Smart Systems, Origin and AluK remain strong choices. They are widely used, well supported and familiar to many UK installers.

Price and value for money

The cheapest window is rarely the best window. Equally, the most expensive product is not always the right choice for every home.

We judged value by looking at what you get for the money. That includes styling, specification, brand reputation, installer availability, colour options, hardware, performance and long-term confidence.

A window can be good value at a higher price if it gives you better design, better engineering or a stronger brand. A lower-cost window can also be a good choice if it performs well and suits the project.

Long-term confidence

Windows are a long-term purchase. We considered brand stability, market reputation, system support, installer familiarity and whether the product has a proven track record.

This is where established systems often have an advantage. A new product can be excellent, but homeowners should still consider who makes it, who fabricates it, who installs it, and what happens if parts or service are needed later.

Why choose a flush casement window?

The concept of a flush casement window is not new.  Original timber windows have featured a flush opening sash for many decades.  PVCu systems followed with Evolution Windows, being the first to introduce flush timber-look or timber-alternative windows.

Aluminium as a flush casement has been a little more challenging to create, because of how aluminium is extruded and how windows and mechanically joined at the corners.

Now you have a great choice of contemporary or traditional flush casement windows in aluminium.

The best aluminium flush casement window depends on what you value most: appearance, specification, budget, brand, availability, or long-term confidence.

The best overall flush casement aluminium window

OUR CHOICE

Smart Systems Alitherm 400

The Smart Systems Alitherm 400 is a versatile aluminium window range, and its flush casement version is our current choice as the best overall aluminium flush casement window. It is not the most expensive, the slimmest or the most architecturally advanced window in this guide. Its strength is the way it balances appearance, specification, availability and value.

As well as the standard flush casement option, Alitherm 400 is also available with heritage flush styling, steel-look options, tilt and turn windows and fixed windows. There is also a wider suite of matching residential doors and patio doors, making it easier to create a consistent look across the whole property.

Hidden trickle vent options, good thermal performance, reliable specifications and wide installer availability all add to its appeal. For most UK homeowners, Alitherm 400 offers the strongest all-round package. That is why we rate it as the best overall aluminium flush casement window.

Best Contemporary Flush Casement Window

OUR CHOICE

Cortizo Cor-70

Newer in the market, Cortizo Casement Windows are designed specifically for the UK market, and in our view, they offer one of the slimmest and most contemporary casement profiles available today. The flush casement version in particular provides a clean and well-proportioned look that competes directly with the best-known British and European systems.

Flush externally and stepped internally, these outward-opening windows have a great look and feel to them, and are suitable for replacement and new build projects. You can also use these in commercial buildings.

Cortizo are the best aluminium flush casement windows with contemporary styling. Elegant, appealing, and with impressive size capability. Cortizo windows are a serious alternative to the Origin OW-70 and from feedback into this website, a cheaper option as well.

Best Premium Engineering

OUR CHOICE

Schüco AWS 80 SC

Unlike the UK, where the brand of windows and doors is rarely mentioned when a house goes on the market, European buyers often recognise premium glazing brands as part of the property specification. Schüco is one of those brands.

The Schüco AWS 80 SC is comes from what is regarded by architects and developers as one of the most desirable brands of aluminium windows with a substantial range of products to meet virtually any requirement.

It has the engineering quality, performance credentials and design refinement you would expect from Schüco, making it a strong choice for higher-end residential and commercial projects. The AWS 80 SC is not the cheapest option in this guide. Schüco is the right choice if you want a premium aluminium flush casement window and are prepared to pay more for the brand, specification and engineering behind it.

Best Mainstream Premium Choice

OUR CHOICE

Origin OW-70

The OW-70 is, in our view, Origin’s best product and a highly impressive aluminium window. Flush outside and stepped inside, it’s very attractive, and carries the Origin reputation and quality.

The sightlines are excellent, the look and feel are safe and reliable, and the market loves this particular window.

The OW-70 is in our view Origin’s best product. It is a beautiful flush casement window with the Origin brand reputation and quality. It’s the reassuring option, but it does come at a price premium and you’ll find cheaper windows.

Best Fully Flush Design

OUR CHOICE

Alumil S85

New in the UK, the Alumil S85 is a slim, modern aluminium flush casement window designed for homeowners who want clean lines, more glass and a contemporary appearance. Its main appeal is it is flush both sides with a mere 68mm face sightline. Compared to the only other double flush casement window on the market, the Origin OW-80 which is 91mm. Even at the mullion it is only 121mm compared to the 148mm of the Origin product. This gives the window a more refined and slimmer appearance overall.

Alumil is an international systems company, with a global reputation in sophisticated windows and doors. The new S85 flush casement window promises the sharp, minimal look many people want from aluminium, while still providing the practical benefits. Large sash sizes, PAS 24 certification, excellent U-Values and long term durability are other features. .

Compared to it’s only competition, the S85 feels more architectural and design led and an excellent choice of a latest generation aluminium window that is flush both sides.

Best Proven Trade Option

OUR CHOICE

Aluk 58 BW

The staple aluminium window brand from Aluk, the 58BW is a long-established, tried and tested brand in the UK and generally excellent throughout. Aluk windows are rarely the best looking, but their specifications are spot on, and U-Values, acoustics, and weather performance are always accurate. The 58BW remains a dependable and proven option, particularly for trade installers and commercial projects.

The flush casement is widely used in apartments, new build homes with matching tilt and turn and contemporary window options. Aluk windows in our view favour reliable specifications and practicality over aesthetics.

You can trust the Aluk brand and the 58BW is a reliable, well-designed, safe, secure and dependable window and where the slimmest of most modern styling isn’t top of your list.

Best for styling options

OUR CHOICE

Deceuninck Decalu 88 Flush Casement

The Decalu88 Flush Casement is a modern aluminium flush casement window designed to give a clean, balanced appearance inside and outside the home. The opening sash sits level with the frame, creating the flatter, neater look many homeowners want from a flush window, whether for a contemporary property or a more traditional style of house.

Whilst not the slimmest, Deceuninck products are very good on thermal performance. U-values as low as 1.2 W/m²K with double glazing and as low as 0.8 W/m²K with triple glazing, helped by the system’s patented thermal break make this a highly energy efficient windows.

Best Budget Option

OUR CHOICE

Alunet Aluna and Aluna+ Windows

Aluna and Aluna+ sit at the more affordable end of the aluminium window market. These windows are simple to fabricate, easy to understand and designed to offer good styling without the higher cost of more premium aluminium systems.

The flush casement option has a clean appearance and can work well on replacement window projects, rental properties, developments and homes where budget is a key consideration. The system also offers a choice of frame profiles, giving installers and homeowners useful flexibility around style and design.

Aluna is not trying to compete directly with Schüco, Origin or Alumil at the premium end of the market. Its appeal is value. If you want a smart-looking aluminium flush casement window that meets currrent and future U-Values with a good specification, Aluna and Aluna+ are worth a look.

Our overall winner remains the Smart Systems Alitherm 400 because it gives most buyers the best balance of styling, specification, availability, matching products and value. Other windows in this guide may be better in specific areas, but Alitherm 400 is the strongest all-round choice for most UK homes.

More information and where to buy flush casement windows.

While we consider the Alitherm 400, the best flush casement aluminium window right now, the ‘best’ very much depends on your own preference, budget and project type, replacement windows or new build. There is no bad window on the market, but where they differ is who makes them, the design and engineering and their price point. Whether you like their styling and, of course, confidence in the company quoting you also matters. But do bear in mind, that all windows are only as good as their manufacturing quality and their installation.

Some installers will gloss over the U-Values so always ask for the full specifications and how your windows meet the stated U-Values. Trickle vents will also be provided in most of these, adding to the sightline at the top frame. Or get in touch for window and door information and advice.

There are many other brands of windows, so do get in touch if you are quoted for a particular window and need more information on it and how it compares to our top choices here.
