In preparing this review we visited the Glideline factory in Great Yarmouth to see a full-size working model of the GPD80, with which substantial time was spent opening, closing, seeing it manufactured and extensively photographed.

This review is written by Nick Dardalis, who has worked in the UK door and window industry since 1989. Every review on this site is based on direct product assessment. This is done with a combination of deep technical document examination, factory visits, showroom evaluations and real installation environments. No manufacturer pays for a review. No score is negotiated.

What is the Glideline GPD80 Pivot Door?

The GPD80 is Glideline’s first dedicated pivot door. It is a fully glazed or decorative panel aluminium entrance door built around a robust 80mm thermally broken aluminium profile with multi-chamber construction.

The door is designed to be used as a glazed pivot door, or you can choose from 56 different decorative panels to create a designer front door. Slim aluminium framing creates a large transparent entrance door that lets natural light. Suitable as a front, side or rear entrance door, with optional sidelights and toplights available.

Every GPD80 is made to measure. There are no stock sizes. Each door is manufactured to the exact dimensions of the opening, which means it fits the project rather than the project having to fit around the door.

The door uses a concealed pivot system with a floor-mounted pivot pin at the bottom and a matching pivot at the head of the frame. The panel rotates on this vertical axis rather than swinging from side-mounted hinges.

The pivot point is offset from the panel edge, which means one side moves outward while the other moves inward, creating the smooth, balanced rotation that pivot doors are known for. Despite panel sizes up to 2.1m wide and 3.0m high with a maximum sash weight of 160kg, the balanced pivot geometry means the door feels light and controlled in operation.

Because the pivot hardware is concealed within the frame and the floor, there are no visible hinges on the door face. The result is a clean, uninterrupted appearance on both sides.

Why Glideline Developed the GPD80

This is where understanding Glideline as a company matters. If you have read our review of the Glideline GS15 sliding door, you will know this is a manufacturer that thinks carefully about where the gaps are in the market and develops products to fill them properly rather than rushing out something half-finished.

The GPD80 follows the same approach. Pivot doors have grown steadily in the UK residential market, but many of the options available to trade installers are either very high-end bespoke products with long lead times and complex ordering. Pivot doors are usually also associated with brands such as Pirnar, RK Doors, Spitfire, Alumil and others, all designed to create impressive grand-scale doors. Glideline saw a gap for a properly engineered, independently tested pivot door that a trade installer can specify confidently and fit without unnecessary complexity.

The showroom model reviewed is 1.4m wide and 2.3m high which would be an excellent solution for a full-sized front door in most houses where presently they might have a door and side panel with fixed glazed panel above.

The GPD80 now sits alongside the GS15, GS20 and GS25 sliding doors, the GB49 bifold, the Aspect sliding door and the GR49 residential door, giving Glideline installers a complete entrance and opening solution from a single manufacturer.

GPD80 Design and Aesthetics

The door is available in several configurations — single pivot panel, or with one or two sidelights to create a wider entrance composition. Sidelight layouts include single sidelight left or right, double sidelights for symmetrical openings, and offset configurations for asymmetrical designs. Open-in or open-out operation is available.

The flush threshold is designed for clean integration between internal and external floor finishes, supporting barrier-free access. Integrated concealed drainage within the threshold manages water run-off without visible channels or raised sections. A range of sub-cill sizes accommodates different floor levels, drainage requirements and installation conditions.

Having now seen the door in person at the factory, the first thing that stands out is its presence. Great styling, bold but not overpowering in appearance. What strikes most is the overall build quality. The door feels engineered rather than simply assembled from standard profiles.

The frame profiles are neat without appearing bulky, and the detailing around the door leaf, glazing and frame junctions is clean. Glideline’s doors are already well known for quality and this new addition is no exception.

The profiles are neatly assembled around the polyamide thermal break, with consistent joints and a level of finish that reflects the quality of the manufacturing process. The paint finish is high quality and and Qualicoat Approved . The showroom sample and production profiles we saw throughout the factory all displayed a consistent finish and attention to detail, exactly what you would expect from a premium architectural product.

We’ve seen many pivot doors over the years, ranging from specialist European systems through to products adapted from standard door platforms. For example on commercial doors it’s easy to adapt one to a pivot door. What we liked here is that the door looks purpose designed as a pivot system rather than a large door panel fitted with pivot hardware. The proportions are the same on the top and sides with marginal differences depending on thre threshold chosen.

This differs when commercial alumimium doors are converted to pivot doors typically with a 100mm overall sightline at the sides, 105mm sightline at the top and 112mm sightline on the bottom, but only used in commercial buildings and not suitable for dwellings.

From a visual perspective, the glazed versions work particularly well because the pivot arrangement allows for larger glass areas and panel sizes than would normally be practical with a conventional hinged door. The result is a front door that creates a genuine focal point for the property while still feeling refined and understated.

As with any premium entrance door, photographs only tell part of the story. Seeing the product up close gives a much better appreciation of the engineering, finish quality and attention to detail that goes into its manufacture. As this product rolls out to the Glideline network of showrooms it’s worth seeing. Of course Glideline welcomes the public and trade by appointment to its factory.

What is the GPD80 Pivot Door Like to Use?

One of the biggest advantages of seeing a product in person is being able to move beyond the specification sheet and experience how it actually works.

Despite the door being in a showroom setting it was correctly installed as it would be in a home and made at a standard size. The first thing that surprised us was how little effort was required to operate it. You naturally expect a large pivot door to feel heavy, but the balance provided by the pivot mechanism means much of that weight effectively disappears once the door is moving.

Opening the door feels very different to a conventional hinged entrance door. Rather than swinging from one side, the panel appears to glide around its pivot point with a smooth, controlled motion. There is a sense of mechanical precision to the movement that immediately gives confidence in the engineering behind the system.

What also impressed was the quality of the damping and closing action. There was no rattling, vibration or feeling of excessive momentum as the door moved. Instead, the panel remained stable and controlled throughout its travel, returning smoothly into the closed position.

The hardware itself feels substantial and appropriately engineered for a product of this size. Handles, locks and operating components all have a reassuring solidity to them, which is exactly what you want from a premium entrance door. Nothing feels lightweight or decorative for the sake of appearance.

The sound of the door closing is another detail worth mentioning. Well-made doors tend to have a distinctive quality when they shut, and this was no exception. Rather than the hollow or metallic sound sometimes associated with oversized glazed doors, the closing action produces a solid, refined and reassuring feel that reflects the overall quality of the Glideline-made product.

As with many premium architectural products, it is difficult to fully appreciate these characteristics from photographs alone. The engineering, balance and operating experience become apparent only when you stand in front of the door and use it for yourself. From our experience, the overall impression is of a product that has been carefully engineered to make a very large and visually impressive entrance door feel remarkably easy and enjoyable to operate.

Technical Specification

The full specification is available on the Glideline website or you can contact us for more information, but in line with typical aluminium door specifications, the key specs are below:

  • Frame and sash depth: 80mm
  • Glazing: Minimum 28mm up to 64mm maximum (double or triple glazed)
  • Maximum panel width: 2,100mm
  • Maximum panel height: 3,000mm
  • Maximum sash weight: 160kg
  • U-value: From 0.77 W/m²K (triple glazed), depending on glass specification and unit make up
  • Air permeability: Class 4 (EN 12207) — highest classification
  • Water tightness: Class 5A (EN 12208)
  • Wind resistance: Class 5C (EN 12210)
  • Security: PAS 24 tested and passed
  • Threshold: Flush with integrated concealed drainage
  • Configurations: Single pivot, with single sidelight, with double sidelights, offset sidelights
  • Operation: Open-in or open-out

As standard , Glideline make the doors with 36mm glass units 6-24-6 or aluminium panels 36mm reinforced. The maximum panel width and height can be the maximum sizes quoted above with glass. Where you require a door with a decorative panel, these can be made at maximum sizes of 1500w x 2600 tall. This is a panel manufacturer size limitation. When you choose this door as your front door, Smart Lock comes as standard.

Even better, these doors come with no set pivot point. The showroom example was set at 200mm in from the frame edge, Glideline can set the pivot points as required by the customer to provide a more or less centrally pivoted door.

Performance and Testing

The GPD80 has been independently tested across all the key performance areas that matter for an external entrance door in the UK. These are not theoretical figures or system company projections. They are independently verified test results on the actual GPD80 system.

Typical reviews don’t usually expand too much on air, wind and water testing, but pivot doors are worthy of further explanation. This is because unlike a typical hinged door, they don’t shut on a fully rebated frame.

In the Door and Window Experts Website view, the fact that this door achieves two out of three best achievable results on their respective scales is impressive. The water tightness result is not the highest available on the EN scale, but remains respectable for a glazed pivot door that does not close on a conventional rebated frame.

Looking at the air, water and wind figures, the average homeowner probably won’t know what these mean for them and their new door. Therefore these are explained below.

picture of pivot door frame and low track threshold

Air Permeability — Class 4 (EN 12207). The scale runs from Class 0 (lowest) to Class 4 (highest). Class 4 is tested under pressures up to 600 Pa. The GPD80 achieves the highest possible classification. It does not get better than this.

Water Tightness — Class 5A (EN 12208). The scale runs from Class 1A to Class 9A for fully exposed installations (the “A” means tested as unprotected). This means, no canopy, no porch, no overhang. Class 5A means the door withstood 200 Pa of water pressure for 35 minutes. The scale goes up to Class 9A (600 Pa for 55 minutes). The GPD80 is therefore mid-range on the full scale. This is fine for most residential applications, but not the highest achievable. For a pivot door which does not close on a full rebate, this is actually a respectable result. If the door is fitted in a sheltered entrance with a porch or canopy, which most pivot door suppliers recommend in exposed installations, it is more than adequate.

Wind Resistance — Class 5C (EN 12210). This test has two components. The number (1–5) indicates the wind pressure the door can withstand: Class 1 is 400 Pa, Class 5 is 2,000 Pa. The letter (A–C) indicates how little the frame deflects under that pressure: A allows the most deflection, C allows the least. So Class 5C means the door was tested at the highest wind pressure and showed the least deflection. This is the highest possible classification on both measures. It does not get better than this, so credit to the product.

The thermal performance of 0.77 W/m²K with triple glazing comfortably exceeds current Building Regulations and is well positioned for the tighter targets expected under the Future Homes Standard. Air permeability at Class 4 is the highest classification available. Water tightness at Class 5A and wind resistance at Class 5C confirm the door’s suitability for exposed locations.

PAS 24 security testing was carried out on a reference doorset of 1.2m x 2.0m, confirming the system meets the UK’s enhanced security standard for residential entrance doors.

Colour and Finish Options

The GPD80 can be specified in over 150 RAL powder-coat colours, with Anthracite Grey (7016M), Jet Black (9005M) and White (9016G) as standard finishes. Textured finishes are also made to order.

For projects requiring a metallic or natural metal appearance, anodised aluminium finishes are another special order.

Standard anodising is Class 15 for general external use. Class 20 anodising is available for more demanding environments including coastal locations, industrial areas and properties near swimming pools. The anodised range includes silver, bronze, champagne, stainless steel, copper, gold and several brushed and re-polished options and all to Qualanod Standard.

Wood-effect powder coating comes in oak, pine, walnut, sapele, cherry and chestnut finishes. Dual-colour specification again is a special order but possible.

Security and Energy Efficiency

The GPD80 is PAS 24 tested and passed on the complete door assembly. This is the current UK enhanced security standard for residential entrance doors.

Doors are available with either standard multi-point locking with lever handles or keypad operation from the outside and handle and turn operation inside. The Smart Lock option is standard when intended as a front door.

The thermal performance with triple glazing achieves a U-value from 0.77 W/m²K, which is strong for a predominantly glazed entrance door. The 80mm thermally broken aluminium profile with multi-chamber construction and polyamide thermal break delivers this without compromising the slim framing that makes the door attractive.

Solar control glazing is available as an option for south-facing or fully exposed installations where heat gain needs to be managed.

Other Products to Consider

The market for pivot doors is very much determined by your budget, how you spec up your door and what brands you buy. The Glideline GPD80 is not a budget door, but it’s not intended to sit at the very top end of the market either. Glazed pivot doors are few and far between because most brands go full-on with a decorative product rather than glass. You can also consider:

Reynaers MasterLine 8 Pivot Door

Part of the established MasterLine 8 system, available through the trade fabricator network. Standard and XL variants. The performance figures. water tightness 4A, wind resistance C3 are lower than the GPD80 across all key metrics. That said, a capable system from a respected manufacturer but not at the same tested performance level. Prices typically from £6,960 plus VAT through trade sources.

Spitfire S-700 Pivot Door

A well-known statement door, manufactured in Greece, available through UK dealers. Panels up to 2m x 3m. Predominantly solid or panelled rather than fully glazed, so a different proposition to the GPD80. Prices vary but typically start around £4,500 plus installation, rising considerably with premium finishes and larger sizes.

RK Pivot Door

German-manufactured components, panels up to 2m x 4m, U-value of 0.72 W/m²K, PAS 24:2022 and Secured by Design. A well-specified door with a comprehensive design range including solid, glazed and mixed panels. A strong competitor at the premium end. Strong brand recognition but limited published performance data. Prices typically from around £5,500 plus installation, rising considerably with premium finishes and larger sizes.

Pirnar Pivot Door

Slovenian manufacturer with fifty years of history. Panels up to 2.4m wide and an extraordinary 6m high. Proprietary CarbonCore construction. If budget is not a constraint and you want the most dramatic entrance door available, Pirnar is the benchmark. Expect to pay significantly more than any other option on this list.

Alumil Supreme SD115 Pivot Door

A 115mm deep system from a major global aluminium systems company. Max sash weight 250kg, Uf from 0.75 W/m²K, RC3 burglar resistance. Strong specifications, though UK availability and the installer network are still developing. Prices from £4000 plus VAT depending on the design.

Urban Front Pivot Door

Handcrafted timber pivot doors from a family-run company in Buckinghamshire. Up to 1.5m wide and 3m high in European oak and other timbers. A completely different material and aesthetic to the GPD80. Prices from £6,019 plus VAT for a RAL painted door, rising to £9,900 plus VAT for oversized European oak.

All prices shown are indicative only and based on information available at the time of writing. Actual prices vary depending on size, specification, installation requirements and supplier.

Conclusion, More Information, Where to View and Buy the Glideline GPD80

Pivot doors are one of those products that can easily become more about appearance than practicality. We’ve seen plenty over the years that look impressive in photographs but leave questions around weather performance, security, servicing or day to day usability.

What impressed here is that the engineering appears to be every bit as important as the aesthetics. Having seen the door in person and operated it, it feels like a genuine architectural product rather than a standard entrance door made bigger. The quality of the frame, the hardware, the finish and the way the door moves all contribute to a product that feels properly engineered from the outset.

That doesn’t mean a pivot door is automatically the right choice for every home. A well-designed hinged entrance door will often provide better weather sealing, lower cost and greater flexibility for many projects. If your primary goal is security, thermal performance and practicality, a conventional door remains an excellent solution.

If your brief is to create wow-factor pivot door then the more expensive products are your go-to with a big price to match. However, if these luxurious pivot doors are out of your price range, the Glideline product represents a genuine alternative.

Pivot doors, particularly on a contemporary new build or large renovation project, offer something that a conventional entrance door simply cannot replicate. The scale, the movement and the visual impact create an entirely different experience.

However, Glideline has done something few manufacturers have done. The vast majority of pivot doors are designed to be decorative and rarely glazed. This therefore makes the door different compared to the luxury end of the market and the company has matching hinged doors, windows, bifolds and sliding doors to create a complete home solution all from one brand.

As always, we would encourage anyone considering a pivot door to see one in person before making a decision. Photographs can show the appearance, but only by standing in front of the product and operating it yourself do you gain a proper understanding of the engineering, quality and overall experience.
